Korea: Material
Culture Series

A bounded documentary field study beginning in Seoul.

The Korea: Material Culture Series records selected parts of Korean material life through direct observation, photography, firsthand reporting, and documentary evidence.

The initial field period is deliberately limited. Primary fieldwork will take place principally in Seoul, where the project will examine a small number of accessible subjects closely rather than attempt to survey the country.

Do not explain the country. Record what can actually be seen.

01 / The Series

Small field. Primary evidence.

This is not a survey of Korea and it is not travel writing. The first field period establishes a focused visual and documentary record of selected material systems in Seoul.

Observe a limited number of subjects closely enough to leave a useful record.

The researcher is not the subject of the books. Personal impressions and travel narrative are deliberately secondary to the physical record.

A museum collection, a market, a kitchen, a workshop, a room, an object, a meal, a tool, a building, or a medical facility may become a field subject when it can be documented directly and with sufficient depth.

The scope is determined by time, access, geography, and the quality of evidence available in the field.

The first field archive will determine which subjects merit subsequent publication.

02 / Documentary Fields

The initial field is deliberately narrow.

These are areas of investigation for the Seoul field period, not claims of comprehensive national coverage.

01 / Museum Culture

Collections & Display

Museums, exhibitions, objects, display systems, labels, publications, museum shops, craft collections, historical collections, and the visible ways material culture is preserved and presented.

02 / Food

Food & Table

Markets, ingredients, preparation, cookware, vessels, preservation, fermentation, packaging, restaurants, retail, and the physical organization of eating.

03 / Craft

Making & Objects

Accessible workshops, makers, materials, tools, finished objects, traditional techniques, contemporary craft, and small-scale production.

04 / Architecture

Buildings & Interiors

Selected buildings and accessible interiors examined through materials, rooms, furniture, fixtures, spatial organization, and visible use.

05 / Everyday Objects

Ordinary Material Life

Packaging, household goods, clothing, tools, appliances, stationery, retail displays, signs, utensils, and other objects encountered directly in the city.

06 / Selected Systems

Document What Access Allows

A limited number of additional subjects may enter the record where legitimate access, time, and documentary value make sustained observation possible.

Current Investigation / Seoul

Korea:
Medical Travel

One specialized investigation within the larger Seoul field. The subject is the material and logistical environment encountered by an international medical patient.

Depending on access, the record may include hospitals, clinics, interpretation, coordination, wayfinding, transportation, technology, hospitality, and recovery environments.

04 / Method

Record first. Interpret later, if necessary.

The method is documentary rather than essayistic. The book establishes the evidence and leaves room for the reader to make connections.

01 / Observation

Be there.

Direct observation of objects, spaces, processes, displays, food, materials, and environments available in the field.

02 / Photography

Show it clearly.

Photography is used as documentary evidence: establishing objects, details, spaces, sequences, materials, and visible conditions.

03 / Primary Sources

Ask who knows it.

Firsthand interviews, captions, documents, museum records, technical sources, and other available primary evidence are used where they materially strengthen the record.

04 / Restraint

Do not force a conclusion.

The publication does not need to tell the reader what a documented object, space, or practice means. Description, evidence, sequence, and context come first.

05 / Research Archive

Build the archive before deciding the books.

The March field period produces a primary visual and documentary archive. Publication follows the evidence.

Location

Where was it?

City, district, street, building, market, museum, shop, restaurant, workshop, facility, or other documented site.

Subject

What was recorded?

Object, material, food, process, room, building, display, tool, technology, institution, or visible system.

Evidence

How do we know?

Photograph, direct observation, firsthand interview, documentary record, museum information, technical source, or other identifiable evidence.

06 / Fieldwork

Seoul first.

The initial field period is intentionally limited to what one researcher can document properly.

Two to three weeks is enough to begin a record. Not enough to claim a country.

Primary fieldwork will be concentrated principally in Seoul during March 2027. The objective is to document a manageable number of subjects carefully rather than accumulate a superficial national survey.

Access, time, geography, and the quality of the evidence will determine the final field. Additional regions can be studied in later field periods when a specific subject warrants them.

Document what can be seen.
